When pet owners go looking for a new home, they’ve got more than themselves to think about. To keep an animal safe, happy, and comfortable, it’s important to find pet friendly housing. This also prevents issues with the neighbours. There are a few points buyers should keep in mind to make sure a new home is pet friendly.
House Location
A house’s location makes a big difference for pets. Is the surrounding area safe? In the cities, buyers should avoid houses close to large, busy roads as this could be a serious problem if the pet got loose. In the country, buyers should research whether an area has trouble with dangerous wildlife.
In addition, check to see if a location has a nice surrounding area for the pet. For dogs, is there lots of room to go for a walk or are there any parks nearby. For cats, would it be safe for the cat to roam around outside?
Yard
For larger animals, having a big yard helps quite a bit. This gives the pet room to run around outside and burn off extra energy. Without a yard, the animal will be cooped up and could start damaging the house out of frustration. It also means the pet owner will need to commit a bigger amount of time to taking the animal outside. While finding a home with a yard isn’t always possible, especially in the city, pet owners should make an effort.

If a house does have a yard, does it also have a fence? This is also important for pet safety. If a yard doesn’t have a fence, it’s too likely that the pet will run off and get lost or injured. Tying up the animal might work, but this is a bit risky. If a house’s yard doesn’t have a fence, one will need to be set up. This is one extra cost to factor in before buying a new property.
A pet friendly house should match the pet in size. Larger animals need a larger house. If a large dog is in a tiny house, it will be more likely to knock over furniture and cause other damage. House size can be balanced out with a yard. If a small house has a large yard, a larger pet will get by. Problems come up though when a large pet doesn’t have any room in the house or outdoors.
Neighbourhood Rules
Different parts of Australia have different rules for pets. Some neighbourhoods limit the number of pets a person can own while other neighbourhoods might not allow pets at all. This is especially common in shared apartment buildings. New buyers should always mention that they own pets when looking at homes so they can learn the rules ahead of time and not when it’s too late.
